The value of independent Cinema

Several months ago, I saw the film, Yoru wa Mijikashi Aruke yo Otome. As one can probably glean from the title, this is a film that did not receive wide release, I had to go to a local independent cinema in order to see it. Many films don’t receive wide releases; this often applies to independent or foreign films. Such films are often played in independent cinemas, and, as such, those cinemas are important places for those who love film.

The Globe Cinema, my personal favourite independent cinema

Independent films have an important place within the idea of films as a whole. Many big budget films are often designed by committee, to appeal to the widest possible audience. Independent films have the advantage of not being constrained by such limitations. They’re often more experimental and more abstract. They can explore ideas that other films cannot. There’s a level of freedom allowed with the creation of an independent film that allows its creator to express themselves in ways that mainstream movies would never allow. Because of this, independent films are vital to the artistic medium that is film.

Independent cinemas are also places where foreign films are given the centre stage. Unfortunately, not many people would go out on their own accord to see films that are not in their native language. This is unfortunate as such films are often fascinating.Foreign films often showcase the ideas of creators from a completely different culture. In watching such a film, one can gain insights in other cultures, their values, sensibilities, and ideas. Because of this, foreign films hold immense value to movie watchers as well.

These are just two examples of why independent cinemas are important. They showcase films that one simply won’t find elsewhere. They have an immense value to the artistic medium of film, and I highly recommend everyone look up one near them and check out what’s playing; go see something that you wouldn’t normally see.
